Port Operations in Long Beach Resume to Normal at 6 p.m. Shift

SAN FRANCISCO (September 19, 2002) – The SSA terminal in Long Beach resumed normal operations at the 6 p.m. shift tonight, and it appears that the ILWU has halted its selective strike against the company.  As a result, the PMA is suspending its planned shutdown of the Southern California port complex as long as operations continue at normal levels.

“After a week of withholding labor, the Union dispatched workers as PMA requested,” said PMA President and Chief Executive Officer Joe Miniace.   “This is a positive sign, and I am hopeful this signals that the ILWU and PMA will be able to work together toward a new coastwide contract that positions our ports for growth in the new century,” he said.
