PMA Statement on Hiring of Security Detail for Lead Negotiator
SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. (October 1, 2002) -- In response to numerous press inquiries, the PMA wishes to state the unfortunate reasons the PMA made the decision several days ago to employ a security detail for its lead negotiator.
At that time, there was good reason to believe that security was necessary. That position has not changed.
The PMA came to the meeting with the Federal Mediator today ready to bargain. The security detail was not in the meeting room. They were simply on the same floor where the meeting was taking place. Mr. Miniace was not aware that the security detail had remained on the floor after escorting him to the place where the meeting was set to occur.
We would hope the Union would understand these circumstances, rather than trying to create an issue that has absolutely nothing to do with bargaining.
We encourage the Union to return to the bargaining table, to sign a contract extension that will enable the ports to re-open, and to re-engage in meaningful dialogue with the Federal Mediator.
